Join the THUNDER External Stakeholder Advisory Board (ESAB) and help shape the future of data centre waste heat recovery in Europe! By joining, you’ll stay up to date with the project’s latest developments, exchange knowledge with experts, and contribute to the wider adoption of innovative and sustainable energy solutions.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Data centres worldwide are estimated to account for 1–2% of global electricity consumption. In Europe, their electricity demand is expected to reach 98.5 TWh per year by 2030.
Recovering waste heat generated by data centre cooling systems therefore offers significant potential to improve energy efficiency and support the energy transition.
The THUNDER project aims to overcome existing barriers to the widespread adoption of data centre waste heat recovery by developing an innovative and cost-effective seasonal thermal energy storage solution based on thermochemical materials. THUNDER brings together key actors across the value chain, including data centre operators, innovative storage providers, heat pump manufacturers, and district energy companies.
The solutions will be validated under real operating conditions at the demonstration site in Varna, Bulgaria. As data centre waste heat recovery is not yet widely implemented there, the demonstration will help promote market uptake in regions facing similar challenges.
Since a direct connection between the demonstration site and Varna’s district heating network is not feasible, THUNDER will develop the “Heat on Wheels” concept, enabling flexible heat transport and demonstrating solutions that can be replicated in similar energy systems.
The project’s research and innovation activities will follow a structured approach, covering design, modelling and testing; demonstration under real operating conditions; and performance and replicability assessments. In parallel, co-design and training workshops will be organised at selected replication sites to engage stakeholders, raise awareness, and support the wider adoption of THUNDER solutions across Europe.

ABOUT THE EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDER ADVISORY BOARD (ESAB)
The successful implementation of the THUNDER project benefits from the involvement of external experts who can follow the project’s progress and provide valuable advice and feedback.
What does it mean to be part of the ESAB?
As an ESAB member, you will have the opportunity to:
- Stay informed by receiving occasional updates on the THUNDER project and invitations to webinars, workshops, and other events organised by the project consortium.
- Support project outreach on a voluntary basis by sharing event invitations and project updates with your professional network.
- Exchange knowledge and experience with other stakeholders through discussion forums that promote best practices and knowledge transfer.
- Contribute your insights by optionally participating in interviews conducted by Euroheat & Power on key policy challenges and drivers for waste heat recovery. These interviews aim to better understand the perspectives of key industries and end users, particularly in relation to energy policy.
Participation in the ESAB is entirely voluntary and does not involve any mandatory tasks or specific commitments. It is an opportunity for stakeholders to stay informed about innovations in data centre waste heat recovery, exchange expertise, and support the successful implementation of the THUNDER project.
